Isabgol Husk and Its Uses ! These are dried seeds of a plant.They are hard, dull white in color and contain slimy material. When put in water, the seeds absorbs water and swell. When such a mixture is swallowed, ispaghula are not digested but remain swollen, thus contribution to the bulk of the faecal matter.This result in the evacuation of the bowel.
Isabgol is a bulking agent.It increases the volume of stool by absorbing water and so softening the fasces.Onset of action is generally 12-24 hours after oral Administration.
Isabgol is particularly useful for the treatment of constipation in old people, in people with heart disease, kidney trouble, during pregnancy and other persons suffering from anal fissures and hemorrhoids(Piles). It is safe, does not cause gripping pain in the abdomen and reduces the need for straining at tha time of passing stools. It is also safe for pregnant mother.
Doses & Administration
The required amount of seeds or power is mixed with a glass of water or milk and small amount of sugar is added to taste.The mixture is stirred and then taken orally, usually at bed time. It causes evacuation the next morning.
Adults-2 Tespoon of husk or powder in a glass of water or milk, once daily.
Children-1/2 1 tsf of housk or powder in a glass of water can be sweeten with sugar,once daily.
It is safe and well tolerated,Rarely it may cause bloating of the abdomen and formation of gas.
Advise the patient to drink much water.Do not advise ispaghula to the patient having sudden on set of colic pain,nausea,vomiting and hardening of stomach.Do not give it in dry form. Dry swallow may cause esophageal impaction.
